As NLP professionals we are all well versed with a number of NLP tools that can assist/support our ability to remain resilient in challenging times, and even with the arsenal of NLP tools available, people still often struggle to remain resilient in times of adversity.
According to the latest estimates from the Labour Force Survey (LFS),
the total number of cases of work related stress, depression or anxiety in 2015/2016 was 488,000 cases, a prevalence rate of 1510 per 100,000 workers
The total number of working days lost due to this condition in 2015/2016 was 11.7 million days. This equated to an average of 23.9 days lost per case.
In 2015/2016 stress accounted for 37% of all work related ill health cases and 45% of all working days lost due to ill health.
Our wellness dashboard
Many of us drive and are more than familiar with the dashboards in our cars. Not only do they give us an indication of how our vehicles are running in terms of speed, petrol usage or whether our handbrake is on or not etc, we are also now being presented with a hundred and one warning signals letting us know that attention may be needed in less than obvious areas (the inner workings of the vehicle). Pretty useful hey! Not only do they alert us to the early signs of a problem, we also gain a better understanding of how our vehicles work that enables us to either fix the problem or to alter our driving styles to maintain performance and effectiveness.
So what about us? We all have our own wellness dashboards that let us know when things are going well and when things are not. The signals can be very different for each and every one of us as we all know. In times of stress, some us may experience sweaty palms, or red blotches around our necks, we may feel hot and sweaty or any of a whole range of responses that we can either relate to ourselves or in others. How familiar are you with yours? How well do you notice those warning signals? How quickly do you respond to ease or fix a problem? How well do you understand the inner workings of you? We all know that our behaviours are an indication of our subconscious processing, and we all know to pay attention to behaviours. However, with our behaviours being our ‘external’ expression of self, what exactly are they drawing our attention to?
In NLP we talk about the ‘physiology of excellence’ whereby making changes to your physiology can result in changes to your mental processing via the cybernetic loop, and very often suggested changes include, changing the way that you stand/sit, your facial expressions (smiling) and even maybe paying attention to your breathing. With the exception of breathing, most people will work with what they can see. But what about your inner workings? What about what exactly is going on inside of you? Are there parts of your inner workings that, if you understood better, you could work with to adopt an ‘inner physiology of excellence’?
