Success Factor Modeling™ - Tools for the Future

Success Factor Modeling™ (SFM) is a methodology developed by Robert and John Dilts in order to identify and apply the critical success factors that drive and support successful people and organisations.  By examining successful businesses, projects and ventures and observing the behavior of high performing individuals and teams, SFM™ helps people and organisations to distinguish the factors that have created a particular pattern of success and to identify the appropriate strategies, tools and support necessary to extend that legacy into the future.

 

One of the strengths of the SFM™ process is its integration of effective business practices with key behavioral skills. Modeling behavioral skills involves observing and mapping the crucial personal and interpersonal processes that produce a successful or remarkable performance of some type. The goal of the behavior modeling process is to identify the essential elements of thought and action required by an individual or group to produce the desired response or outcome - i.e., discovering what is “the difference that makes a difference.” The purpose of behavior modeling is to create a pragmatic map or “model” of that behavior which can be used to reproduce or simulate some aspect of that performance by anyone who is motivated to do so.

 

Success Factor Modeling can be likened to identifying the particular key needed to unlock the door to success for various life situations. The “key” to a particular “lock” is the appropriate combination of behaviors and the corresponding mindset required to effectively address the issues and constraints presented by a certain context.

 

An effective model provides a description of the lock (strategic challenges and objectives) and the key which opens it (skills and actions).

 

Thus, the objective of the Success Factor Modeling™ process is to make an instrumental map - one supported by a variety of exercises, formats and tools that allows people to apply the factors that have been modeled in order to reach key outcomes within their chosen situation.  To accomplish this, SFM applies the following basic template:

Our mindset - which is made up of our inner state, beliefs, attitude and thinking processes - produces outer behavioral actions. It is our mindset that determines what we do and the type of actions we take in a particular situation. These actions, in turn, create outcomes in the external world around us. Achieving desired outcomes in our environment thus requires the proper mindset in order to produce the necessary and appropriate actions.

 

The steps leading to our desired outcomes are the “locks” we seek to open. Our mindset and actions form the “key” which will open a particular lock. The goal of Success Factor Modeling is to find the proper “keys” which open the “locks” necessary to achieve authentic and sustainable success.

 

The Success Mindset Map™ 

 

As a result of applying this template, we have developed what we call the Success Mindset Map™. To create the map, we have applied the distinctions of Success Factor Modeling to analyze well-known entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, Steve Jobs of Apple Inc., Richard Branson of the Virgin Group, Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com, Howard Schultz of Starbucks, Muhammed Yunus of Grameen Bank, Anita Roddick of The Body Shop, and many others. We have established a number of other specific patterns of mindset, behaviors and habits that support Next Generation Entrepreneurship and effective leadership.

 

In fact, the Success Mindset Map™ identifies three main areas of a successful mindset:

 

  1. Meta Mindset – Big-picture clarity

  2. Macro Mindset – Habits of success

  3. Micro Mindset – Ongoing priorities

 

Our Meta Mindset has to do with our fundamental attitude toward our work, our world and our place in that world. Meta Mindset relates to success factors at the levels of purpose and identity. Our Meta Mindset is essentially made up of our sense of passion, vision, mission, ambition and role. These provide the “big-picture clarity” with regard to our project or venture.

 

Macro Mindset relates to the mental disciplines and practices required to bring focus to the big-picture of our venture and begin to put it into action. These practices and disciplines involve success factors at the level of capabilities such as managing our energy and focus, seeking honest and frequent feedback, scanning for opportunities, dealing effectively with risks and adversity, and recharging and balancing ourselves. In this sense, our Macro Mindset defines our habits of success.

 

Our Micro Mindset produces and guides the specific actions necessary build a sustainable venture. Micro Mindset focuses on success factors at the level of behaviors. It determines our ongoing priorities such as clarifying purpose and motivation, developing our product or service, generating interest and revenue, growing and aligning an effective team, acquiring necessary resources, expanding our business, creating value for stakeholders and building win-win partnerships that enrich and leverage available resources.

 

These three areas of mindset may be integrated together to make up what we call a “Mindset Compass.” The fundamental notion of a Mindset Compass is that particular aspects of mindset are necessary to achieve the core outcomes for business success. Securing financial robustness, for instance, would require a different combination of Meta, Macro and Micro Mindset attributes than would be necessary for, say, increasing innovation and resilience. Thus, similar to a literal compass, the Mindset Compass shows which course to take if you want or need to move your project or venture in a certain direction.

 

In summary, the Mindset Compass specifies which elements of the three areas of mindset, Meta, Macro and Micro, are most important and relevant for achieving the various core outcomes required for Success. Depending upon your Meta Goal or current focus for your venture, those outcomes could be enhancing personal satisfaction, making a meaningful contribution, securing financial robustness, increasing innovation and resilience or achieving scalable growth. The Mindset Compass helps you to identify your particular aptitudes and tendencies and to know which ones you need to prioritise and strengthen in order to take your project or venture to the next level.
